You is smart. You is important”.

Good morning, sunshines!

Today is the day Ive been dreading for weeks, it is finally time to clean out my closet and get rid of things I no longer use (for like the third time this year).I have quite a day ahead of me today Its been about three months since I last let myself sit down and just write, and if in being completely honest, it feels nice to do this again. If you guys know me well, youll know that writing is a big part of who I am, so having this little writing time before starting with the chaos that is my closet makes me feel a bit more relaxed and prepared for the days events.

The inactivity in the past months is mainly due to the fact that Ive been very childishly avoiding things that I would inevitably have to face when the time came to write again. Ive gotten quite good at avoiding things and not letting my problems and worries mess up my daily life, but once I go on writing mode, the flood-gates open. Once I sit down and get ready to write, all those doors that are usually lock start opening up and im forced to face the chaos that is my thoughts (much like what Ill be doing later on with my closet).

The last three months have been filled with new experiences and adventures, mostly good. One of these experiences being a fashion event called Diseñando México 32. My city is a small beach city in the north of the country, and not exactly considered a fashion capital in the country, so having an event like this one come here was quite exciting. Ill get to writing more about the weekend-long event later, but I do wanna share one thing that stood out from the whole thing. DMX32 is organized by a ton of people, but the two main “faces” of the event are Sara Galindo and Johann Mergenthaler. Basically what went down was this: I finally had the balls to go up to Sara Galindo (who for those who dont know, shes a mexican fashion entrepreneur and former editor of Elle Magazine México) and introduce myself as a fashion writer. It wasnt a long conversation, but trusting my gut and introducing myself led to a possible writing job at an important mexican magazine. “I dont need to read your work, Ive always thought that the really talented people are the ones who dare to come up to me. Here, call her and ask for a job, I know shes looking for someone”. Sadly, that particular job didnt work out (but if it had, I wouldve left everything and moved to CDMX in a heartbeat), but it did provide me the contact of two very influential women in the mexican fashion industry and a new-found confidence in my talent.

The second big thing thats happened during this period of absence was that I finally planned my trip back to New York. I am proud to say that this is my first trip that Ill make 100% on my own. No parents, no group of friends, no sister. Yes, ive traveled “alone” before, but Id usually go visit a friend, so things are a bit different this time. Yes, I know that traveling to a place where I speak the language, and where Ive been before is not exactly a huge adventure but this time it just feels different, and to me at least, thats what matters. Ever since I set foot back in México two years ago after the NYFW trip, Ive been looking for the perfect excuse to go back, and well, it looks like I finally have it.

I did say most of the things and events were good, but certainly not all of them are. During the past few months I made the mistake of listening, for one reason or another, to all those negative comments I constantly get. My body, decisions, thoughts, actions and words are constantly being policed by people who might have good intentions, but ultimately do more harm than good with their comments. I decided to listen and believe them for a while, and in doing so I started to lose sight of what I want for myself. It wasnt until a few days ago when I finally decided to stop listening. I was reminded that no matter what people say, they dont get to decide my value as a person. Ony I can do that. Ill admit its hard to ignore at times, all the criticism and media garbage that comes my way and tries to tell me “youre not enough”. Not skinny enough, not girly enough, not tall enough, not pretty enough, not smart enough, not whatever enough Its hard to drown out the bad and focus on the good, but its not impossible. If i tried to make a list of all the things I am not enough of, it would be a huge list, but i know that the list of things that I am enough of would be even longer, and that is who I truly am. My mistakes, flaws and imperfections do not define me. I wont let them define me.

A scene from the movie The Help comes time mind (if you havent watched the movie, do yourself a favor and watch it) Aibileen Clark, played by Viola Davis, keeps repeating this little mantra to young Mae Mobley: “You is kind. You is smart. You is important”. I think we should all adopt, and maybe adapt, this mantra and apply it to our daily lives.

During the past few months, almost without really noticing it, Ive started to let down the emotional walls that for the longest time have been my fortress. What I thought gave me strength before, my comfort zone and “safety blanket”, is now starting to become more and more ridiculous. I realize now how absurd it is to hide myself and not allow myself to experience new things out of fear of repeating past mistakes. Yeah, maybe these changes arent huge and wont be notorious to other, but I feel them happening and notice my own evolution, and as far as Im concerned, thats all that counts.

I guess you could say June has been an important month. Just like last year, June has been a month of change and tough decisions, the only difference being that this time around Ive decided to start doing what I love again, not abandoning it out of fear.

I promise, mostly to myself, not to let so much time go by between a post and another. Even the small, seemingly meaningless posts bring a little light into my routine, so I promise to find a way to keep doing this, no matter what. Years ago I made the mistake of not writing for a very long period, hoping to spite someone because of it, but In reality I just ended up losing myself. I promise to never make that mistake again
